Already a favourite with daytime tea lounge lovers, 47 King Street West has snaffled a new head chef, undergone a £100K refurb with a chic new bar and launched an evening menu.

At I Love Manchester, we can’t resist being one of the first through the doors, so purely for you dear readers we decided to test out the new night time menu and give you our feedback.

The menu has plenty of choice but not too much to make you think the chef (Rod Francis whose credentials include Lounge 10, Malmaison and iconic Mash & Air) doesn’t know what he’s doing with a wide selection of meat, fish and veggie options starting from £5.75 for starters and £13.25 for mains.

It is sort of French/British with a dash of the oriental thrown in and front of house man Barry Hymanson told us they were still fine tuning the flavours in this, the second week of evening openings.

We were given an amuse bouche of a tiny burger that melted in the mouth and set the tone. Seated in one of its cream trademark booths, the service was friendly, spotless and efficient. We particularly liked Cindy and promised to plug her daytime scones which we’ll be returning to try out.

My goose and chicken liver parfait was perfect, fatty with a pink inside and the brioche was mouth-watering, in fact I had to ask for more. The rope mussels in a garlic and cream sauce were succulent but the sauce a little salty, we came to realise that Rod is a ballsy chef who creates strong flavours, something I enjoy but my plus one found a bit too robust at time.

Steak And Fat ChipsSteak in a Dianne sauce (a classic that seems to be returning to menus across town), was a perfect piece of sirloin cooked medium rare and wonderful with thick cut chips and a side of garlic mayo that is a meal in itself.

The lamb, managed to be both crisp and pink, a triumph but the accompanying olive mash again was a strong flavour too much for my friend. The side of ginger greens was a gorgeous mouthful and vegetarians can be assured they will get innovative taste and flavours.

We were absolutely stuffed but felt it only right to have dessert and report back. We shared an Eton Mess, which was stacked with fresh fruit, cream and the best meringue I’ve had. But then you would expect this tea room to do good pudding and it doesn’t disappoint.

We washed our meal down with a dry and reasonably priced Prosseco at £26.95 but there is a great choice of wines which Barry explained had been chosen so they can delight by the glass as well, a connoisseurs’ wine list starts from £38.95.

The new chic bar at the other end of restaurant which is opposite San Carlo, is pretty in pink and offers a great choice of cocktails, as well as wines and champagnes.

The new evening menu is available from Wednesdays and throughout the weekend. They are also doing fantastic gut-busting Sunday lunch/dinner (up until 10pm) and Sunday brunches.

Meanwhile the popular daytime menu continues but with a wider choice of afternoon teas if you’re looking to push the boat out.

Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the evening menus of the city, it’s in a stunning location and looks great, while the service from the family run Hymanson team is spotless without being intrusive.

The I Love-ometer scored this a good ‘want to see them again’ rating.
