Sounds From The Other City: the festival season starts in Salford

Tired of over-priced, over-subscribed music festivals you spend all year saving up for only to end up wading around in mud miles away from the stage?

Time for a local antidote.

Sounds From the Other City is shining a light on the work of independent promoters with an all day festival of new and emerging musicians in and around Chapel Street on Sunday.

Now in its 14th year, 2018’s edition of Sounds From the Other City will see 24 different promoters bringing a wide range of performers with them.

Emerging artists include Goat Girl, intriguing art-rockers MOLD, Finnish bubble gum punk trio Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS, Drahla and Nun Habit. This is just a small selection from over 100 acts, which also features a DJ set from Manchester’s very own PINS and a special appearance from the BBC Philharmonic in Salford Cathedral.

SFTOC has hosted many artists on the edge of breaking out over the years, including 2018 BBC Sound of 2018 nominee IAMDDB and Mercury Music Prize winner Sampha, so expect to be treated to a true taste of what the future trends in current music may be.

And the partying goes on through the day and well into the night with a number of club nights and after-parties.

There’s an Antics club night complete with an NYC Indie disco at The Eagle Inn, a Cartier 4 Everyone X Invisible Wind Factory at Islington Mill, a fabulous sounding Regal Disco at The Kings Arms and Thirsty Girls Collective bringing a Homerpolooza evening of fun to The Salford Arms.

It’s also a celebration of Salford, which will transform into SoundsTown for the day. The festival hub and place to collect your wristband is the Carpino Place Showroom opposite Salford Cathedral which will become SoundsTown Town Hall.

Gigs will  take place in some seriously eccentric and exciting locations with not a muddy field or a manky tent in sight. Venues include The Salford Arms, The Old Pint Pot, Islington Mill, the loft of fiverfourstudio and St Philips Church.

And it’s not just the off-the-wall venues you can enjoy because there are some even wackier events including The Soundstown Dog Show which will be held on the Regent’s Trading Estate car park. There’s also a hot dog eating competition – the food variety, not the animal – and the intriguing Moist Collective presents the Moist Queerground Tent.
