You won’t want to miss this paired Rioja wine dinner at the famous Sam’s Chop House

Last month, drinks industry legend George Bergier – a title officially bestowed on him last year by Imbibe magazine – celebrated 50 years of service in Manchester’s bar and restaurant industry.
On Thursday 12th April, the busy head sommelier and wine buyer for Manchester’s three iconic Victorian Chop Houses hosts a celebration of Don Jacabo wine at the famous Sam’s Chop House.
Teaming up with Carlos Rubio, CEO and winemaker at Bodegas Corral SA, they will take you through an evening of paired wining and dining to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Bodegas Corral’s beautiful Don Jacabo Rioja wines.
Founded over a century ago, Bodegas Corral is situated in the heart of La Rioja with Don Jacabo taking its name from the pilgrimage route known as Ruta Jacobea (Saint James’s Way). Ethically produced, each Rioja is produced organically and made from an equal blend of sustainable and organically farmed tempranillo and mazuelo grapes.
George has paired his highlights with the much loved English traditional cooking style of the Manchester Chop Houses and will talk you through these pairings on the evening.
You’ll start with a selection of paired wines and Spanish canapes: anchovy crostinis and black olive tapenade paired with Don Jacabo Tempranillo Blanco 2017; lemon croquettes paired with Don Jacabo Viura 2017 and Don Jacabo Rosado 2017, and padron peppers paired with Don Jacabo’s Crianza 2013.
Then tuck into smoky octopus with baby potatoes, chorizo and fennel paired with Don Jacabo Reserva 2011 before getting stuck into the main event: pink rump of lamb, black olive, dried tomato and anchovy paired with Altros de Corral Single Estate 2010.
Finally, you’ll dive into a Spanish cheese board complemented with Vine Roots Garnacha 2014, before finishing your evening with freshly brewed coffee and confectionary.
Enjoy a proper paired wine feast and learn from two true connoisseurs at the top of their game for just £65 a head.
