Just how expensive is accommodation in Manchester compared to other destinations?

Ever wondered how expensive Manchester is compared to other cities when it comes to accommodation costs? No, neither have we. That’s because we live here. But for tourists and other visitors it’s clearly an important consideration.

So just how expensive is Manchester compared to other destinations?

In a detailed study comparing the price of accommodation in over 200 cities and regions,  Manchester ranked the 50th most expensive, based on the cost of a three-night stay in a 1 to 5 star hotel, hostel, campsite, and peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation service.

According to The Accommodation Price Index 2017, the cost of a three-night stay in Manchester ranges on average from £114.29 for Airbnb to £152.67 for a one star hotel and £464.83 for a five star hotel.

Manchester is the fourth most expensive UK city on the list – less expensive than London (15th), Edinburgh (29th) and Liverpool (49th), but more expensive than Belfast (51st), Leeds (60th), Glasgow (61st), Bristol (68th), Newcastle (89th), Aberdeen (94th) and Birmingham (101st).

The most expensive cities on the index are Monte Carlo (Monaco), St Tropez (France), Reykjavik (Iceland), San Francisco and New York.

The least expensive are Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Skopje (Macedonia), Tirana (Albania), Antalya (Turkey) and Sofia (Bulgaria).

Online campsite booking platform Campsy undertook the research in order to better understand the overall landscape of the hospitality industry, as well as offer holidaymakers an in-depth view of which cities or regions may best suit their budget.

With P2P rental services and younger specialist platforms such as Campsy offering accommodation options, the research aims to shed some light on the rapidly changing marketplace.

“Though the bulk of travel takes place on a city-to-city basis, we are passionate about encouraging travellers to step outside urban areas and seek the unique experiences that nature has to offer,” says Campsy CEO Philipp Hillenbrand.
