Book of Mormon

If you are familiar with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, then you’ll certainly know of their talent in comedy and what they have created with Robert Lopez will leave you in stitches from laughter.

The Book of Mormon is a spectacular show that follows two Mormons, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, in their journey of sharing their beliefs of Jesus Christ with the rest of the world, particularly in Uganda.

Book of Mormon

You’ll be feeling the agony in Elder Price, played by Adam Bailey, as he tries to conquer the quest of spreading the word of God and has to overcome many barriers, one being his partner.

Elder Price is paired with Elder Cunningham, played by Sam Glen, who offers nothing to his fellow Mormon, but is an excellent addition as a gormless side-kick that makes everyone in the audience laugh hysterically from his actions.

Although wildly inappropriate, you will hear complete laughter echoing throughout the theatre because of the extraordinary comedy of this show.

Fantastically catchy songs

The show features an original soundtrack of fantastically catchy songs with very clever lyrics.

“Baptised” performed by Sam Glen (Elder Cunningham) and Nyah Nish (Babulungi) is one of the songs in the show that has the loudest laughter from the audience as the songs have more sexual connotations rather than religious.

There are many outstanding actors in the cast, however, Adam Bailey is the standout performer for me, it is no wonder he is the main star of the show, Elder Price.

His expressions alone are enough to make you laugh but he truly delivers on the song and dance throughout.

Scott Pask’s scenic design is well suited and changes often. The earlier scenes have a heavenly glow of pastel colours connoting more positivity towards the religion.

As the show progresses, there is a sudden contrast between this and a stereotypical dull coloured brown slum is introduced as the Ugandan village, which causes a lot of laughter in the audience from the stereotypical parallels.

Ann Roth’s costume design is spot on with all of the Mormon elders wearing the same costume of a simple white shirt tucked into black pants, not only following the same religion but the same dress sense as well.

This show will appeal to older teens to adults with a dark sense of humour.

I would highly recommend this show for anyone looking to have a great time laughing at the theatre.
