With state of the art equipment, amazing chefs and inspiring recipes, what’s stopping you from becoming a master of the kitchen?

I went down to the Bao’s and Noodles event, where we would learn to create Bao buns an amazing chewy noodles from scratch.

Making noodles

All done in the beautiful spacious and modern setting in Deansgate, with a glass of red wine to accompany too. What a treat!

On the night, there is a real mix of culinary ability on display – but Food Sorcery caters for them all.

Even if you’ve got no skills at all, Food Sorcery will help you to learn the rudiments of preparing food, chopping and cutting, cooking, frying, kneading and so much more.

Our class was led by the charismatic Jan, who to begin with,  talked us through what to expect on a typical night out at Food Sorcery.

Speaking to I Love Manchester, he said: “Basically we provide the knowledge for people to make great food as home, with no fuss.

“We are trying to inspire people to give these great recipes a go at home and to give cooking a go.

“Tonight’s edition is all about creating great noodles and baos from scratch, we can have a drink in super casual settings and just enjoy each other’s company.

“The classes are absolutely for everyone.  We do do more technical classes but most of the classes we take here, everyone can get involved in.

“Even if you have no experience at all – I will help you and talk you through the processes until you have got them under control.

“We’ve got a nice flow with the classes, we have a chat while I demo how to prepare the dishes. Then we break away and everyone has a drink and puts together the first dish.

“I’ll have a look to see how everyone is doing, then we sit down and eat!”

beautiful, well equipped modern settings

Jan has an impressive CV before he joined food sorcery, working at several big restaurants and hotel chains before he broke away to do private chef work.

He has been with Food Sorcery for years, and has a rich and varied experience in the kitchen.

He continued: “It’s great fun, you will meet lovely people, super relaxed atmosphere and you can have a drink if you want. It’s like cooking at Christmas!”

For our first dish, Jan talked us through the proving processes and ingredients used for the dough that makes Bao buns, then we were sent off to create our own.

All done and ready to steam, we were back at the demonstration station to create a beautiful crunchy salad with kewpie mayo.

After we had stuffed our faces with the beautiful Korean pulled pork baos, it was time to get to work on the noodles.

A very beautiful bao (disclaimer – not made by me)

What surprised me and I think will surprise many people who do the classes but don’t cook, is how simple some of the recipes are, and how amazing they taste too.

Great food doesn’t have to be super complicated and fancy, and Food Sorcery proves that with their classes.

Under Jan’s watchful eye we put together the noodles, learned how to caramelise the chicken and prepared the vegetables that would feature in the dish.

And the end result was fabulous, using ingredients that you may not have come across before like sugar cane, tinned coconut milk and pak choi.

From a personal experience I absolutely loved the class, the food was genuinely sublime and there was plenty to take home and share too.

It’s a perfect experience for a date night, or for a private event, and something different that is very casual and enjoyable.

I spoke to Julian and Mia who were on the course, who were looking to ‘try something a bit different’ to your average night out.

Julian said: “I feel like I’ve really learned something new, there’s a few ingredients used tonight that I’ve never used before so that was really nice. They tasted so good too!

“I like the fact that you can ask questions, Jan was full of great knowledge and very attentive. The music has been great too – it’s a great date night if you’re thinking of it.”

Mia said: “Chopping skills and other techniques used to create noodles, steaming too. I’m sure it will all come in great use down the line as I’m going home and making this when I get a chance!

“Jan was very attentive and knowledgable and clearly a very good chef, I think a bit of the magic rubbed off on us. The setting is also beautiful and modern, with lots of great utensils.”

“It’s an all round great experience to get some more skills, and learn from the pros, cooking different types of food that you might not usually be able to cook or experience.”
