Many of us have an old coat at the back of our wardrobe that we no longer want or need. Human Appeal, a British Muslim faith-based charity, have announced they are aiming to collect 3000 unwanted coats this winter to give to homeless people in UK cities including Manchester.

Last year the charity collected 1500 warm coats in Manchester, which were redistributed to 13 homeless shelters, charities supporting refugees, asylum seekers, women’s refuges and other community partners across the city.

Human Appeal will run Wrap Up Manchester for the third year in a row this winter, and they are asking for men’s, women’s, and children’s coats – especially men’s coats – to help keep Manchester warm.

Hand over your spare winter coat to Wrap Up, and they will we re-home it to charities that support the homeless, refugees, children living in poverty and people fleeing domestic violence.

Their statistics show that 4,428 people – one in every 633 people – in the region, no longer have a permanent roof over their heads. Of these, 4,239 are currently living in temporary accommodation, while 189 are sleeping rough.

Wrap Up is an award-winning winter campaign, which sees Human Appeal set up numerous donation points across the city, including Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station and various  SafeStore  self storage  locations, where the public can drop off unwanted coats.

From there, Human Appeal sort through the coats and then distribute them to homeless shelters and other centres. People who need the coats go and collect them from professionals, who can also  provide advice and services to help those in need.

“Charity is a key part of the Muslim faith and there is a great need for charity here at home, in the UK,” said Samra Said, the UK domestic  programmes  manager  for  Human  Appeal.

Human Appeal received widespread coverage for their Muslims for Manchester campaign in May 2017, which saw them raise £28,000 for the victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

“We, in Human Appeal, want to not only offer a hand to those in desperate need of humanitarian aid, but to wrap an arm around those in desperate need of warmth,” said Samra.

“We aim to help people in need all across the world regardless of their race or religion or gender or location. Whether it’s someone in need in Mosul or Manchester, Human Appeal aims to help in every humanitarian crisis.

“This is our third year of Wrap Up Manchester and, every year, the response we have received has been overwhelming. The winter months can be unforgiving for those sleeping rough or unable to afford a winter coat.”

“In the harsh winter months, Human Appeal wants to help local communities to come together to help those most in need. We hope as many as people as possible will warm someone’s body with a coat and warm their heart by letting them know you care.”

People in Manchester can drop off any spare winter coats at Piccadilly Station from 12th-14th November, 7am-11am.

Alternatively, coats can be dropped at participating SafeStore locations including Manchester Central (Cheetham Hill), Old Trafford (Brindley Road), Worsley (Hazelhurst Road), Stockport (Wellington Road North), Oldham (Manchester Road), and Altrincham (Atlantic Street) from 12th-23rd November.
