January is here. You’re probably looking to turn over a new leaf – for a couple of weeks at least – so why not try one of Emily Oldfield’s tips for giving up those old habits and getting fitter, happier and healthier…

Detox

Get yourself feeling cleansed and revitalised for the New Year! A detox is like cleaning up the clutter from Christmas. Away with turkey tummies and beer bellies and say hello to fresh food options which don’t break the bank. Showing that healthy, clean eating is set to be big in 2016 is Itsu, a Japanese eaterie set to open in Spinningfields on January 27th offering over 60 dishes which are packed with protein, low in carbs and contain some delicious detox options! Set to be popular are the detox miso soup, with its intriguing crystal noodles, and the range of sushi and salads. Also proving that healthy eating need not be boring is Thaikun, the Thai-inspired eatery serving up fresh made soups, curries and crazily creative salads including a raw papaya salad packed with protein. Intrigued yet? Finally, serving up steaming bowls of noodle soup brimming with goodness (and known to be a great hangover cure) is Pho, the Vietnamese eatery in the Corn Exchange. Pho is not only the name of the restaurant but of a Vietnamese national dish- a soup packed with fresh herbs, vegetables, slow-cooked stock and lean meat of your choice. Be sure to wash it down with one of their detox-delivering juices, all made to order – including their kale, apple, pineapple and lime blend!

Eat Clean

Clean eating is set to be big in 2016. No, it isn’t a case of dusting your dishes and polishing your plates.  It focuses on foods which are unprocessed, whole and healthy which fill us with energy rather than fat and sugar. This is food which gives you a real glow, tastes great and is surprisingly fuss-free – great if you want a boost when you’re on the go in the city. A smoothie is a great way to enjoy fresh fruit fast. Why not grab a superfood smoothie from Pot Kettle Black in the Barton Arcade? If you fancy a bigger bite, Earth Café on Turner Street offers a range of great value far from boring vegan food packed with flavour and prepared fresh every day. The café prides itself on using seasonal produce and there are a number of raw options including a tasty salad bar and juices. The Earth Burger proves that even fast food can be clean! If you’re looking to indulge in a guilty pleasure, Hotel Chocolat offers a paleo range – chocolate which is unprocessed, pure and packed with intense flavours (as well as nutritional benefits) including the Dark Dominican and Saint Lucia Rabot Estate varieties.

Go Flexi

Pita Pit Manchester Salad

Flexitarian is set to be a buzzword in 2016 – cutting down on the amount of meat we eat and enjoying more veggie options, and there are a number of places in Manchester serving up vegetarian dishes sure to impress. Pita Pit offers awesome falafel-packed pitas as well as salads, capable of having you full for lunch at little over a fiver (and their falafel option is vegan, too). V Revolution is a growing presence in the Northern Quarter serving up vegan fast food, with plans to expand to Edge Street in 2016. With burger options including the ‘Hell-vis Presley,’ this is fast food without the grease (or the meat!) and certainly full of fun.. Eighth Day offers sustainably sourced vegetarian and vegan food and is the place where you can find those specialist items for people with intolerances or allergies. The takeaway counter does a roaring trade too, with many of the products sourced within 20km of the shop!
