Despite its market, decent transport links and proximity to the city centre, Levenshulme still offers slim pickings when it comes to varied dining.

The Buttery is one of a handful of places with a menu worth travelling for, but in isolation these places struggle to make a bigger impact on the community.

However, there’s been cause for optimism recently as street food legend Jimmy Khor of Nasi Lemak fame has announced he’ll be launching his new culinary concept in Lev.

“Secret Diner Levy is all about giving customers authentic, home-cooked dishes from Penang and Asia,” says Jimmy, enthusiastic as ever about his latest venture.

Keen to distance himself from the ‘street food’ label, this new diner will be above Fred’s Ale House, giving him more scope to provide an extensive and ethically-sourced menu.

This new project is not Nasi Lemak but will share some of the Malaysian flavours we’re used to from previous supper clubs. Running Thursday to Sunday every week, Secret Diner Levy will offer a set menu on Fridays and Saturdays, giving a group of up to 20 people the chance to choose from a varied and competitively priced array of small plates and mains.

While it’s all the rage for January, Jimmy will be continuing his vegan-friendly approach and promises up to five vegan options on the set menu – which changes every week. Throughout the four day stint, small plates and bar food such as laksa (soupy, coconut curry with noodles), rempah chicken, king prawns as well as beef and veggie rendang rolls.

Fred’s Ale House has made a name for itself with an eclectic set-up and solid real ale offering, bringing together beer, art and events to your traditional pub framework. The approach will be relaxed in the bar itself, allowing regular drinkers and they will be free to eat in the bar if they prefer.

On the last Sunday of every month, Jimmy will hold a Nasi Lemak-style supper club which will require tickets. This month’s will be a celebration of the Chinese New Year. Although it’s likely this new venture will be a permanent home for Jimmy, he’ll still be popping up at events such as Magic Rock Tap (where he is this weekend) and Foodie Friday in Stockport.

Reservations are recommended for the set menu experience, and while you can contact Fred’s direct, Jimmy is taking the bulk of orders on his Facebook channel. Reserve tickets online and leave a deposit at Fred’s Ale House to confirm your place.

The set menu will be available from 20 January with small plates and snacks available from the bar this Thursday.

Thursday/Friday: 17:00 – 22:00
Saturday/Sunday: 15:00 – 22:00
