Description

‘Ralph Waldo Emerson gives a party at Lower Broughton’

This iconic “The Glamour of Manchester” tshirt design is inspired from the cover art of a rare book found at Manchester’s historic Chetham’s Library, published by the National Labour Press in 1920.

The endearing little book romanticises the glamorous history of the city, with charming chapter headings ranging from ‘Dickens is inspired on oysters and champagne’ and ‘Ralph Waldo Emerson gives a party at Lower Broughton’, to ‘At Rochdale Lord Byron is very bored’ and ‘Charlotte Bronte has days of misery by Oxford Road’.

The author’s obvious love for the city together with his dry wit makes for an amusing read, and as he sums up on the final page: ‘I have written down my Manchester as I saw it. And seeing is often worse than believing’.

Founded in 1653, Chetham’s is the oldest surviving public library in Britain and housed in a medieval sandstone building in Manchester city centre. Help preserve the wonderful history of Chetham’s and support their wide range of activities by donating here
