Thousands of Good Samaritans have been handing out brews at rail stations across the country this morning.

Samaritans volunteers were out early from 7am at Manchester stations, chatting to commuters and handing out PG Tips tea bags.

They were giving out the free tea bags alongside information leaflets, encouraging commuters to enjoy a brew with someone and share some warmth.

Volunteers were also offering a listening ear to those wanting to talk.

The new initiative hopes to encourage friends, family, and workmates to have a chat over a brew during the cold and lonely winter months – rather than suffer in silence.

“Millions of people use the rail network every day and if through this campaign we can encourage them to talk about their problems over a cup of tea, we will have made a significant contribution to their lives and to the lives of those around them,” said Ian Stevens, Network Rail’s Suicide Prevention Program Manager.

Every six seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help.

The charity relies on the public’s kind donations. More than 20,000 volunteers mean they are always there for anyone struggling to cope.

Anyone can contact Samaritans FREE any time from any phone on 116 123, even from a mobile without credit.
