This year you can do Valentine’s Day in style at Manchester’s Peaky Blinders, thanks to their week-long Flappers & Dappers celebrations.
This smart bar (reminiscent of the TV drama of the decade, as if you didn’t already know!) is offering a fantastic set menu at a price point that means you won’t have to set up a Peaky Blinders-style bank heist to afford it.
For just £29.95 per person, you get three courses of traditional English and Manchester-themed grub, plus a glass of prosecco to kickstart your evening.
For starters, you can choose between a vegan soup made with seasonal ingredients, plus baked sourdough bread, made locally in Chorlton; a chicken liver parfait with toasted granary bread and a snazzy rhubarb and gin chutney; or a herb-crusted Manchester egg that comes with a roasted piquante pepper dressing and a seasonal salad.
There’s even more choice when it comes to mains. Think free-range chicken and dauphinoise potatoes, roasted veg, a tangy parmesan crisp and a delicious tarragon cream to pour over the lot; or pan-fried sea bass with sauteed mushrooms, creamed potato and chive veloute.
Vegans are also well-looked-after, with a fantastic wild mushroom risotto that comes with rocket, dried shallots and a basil and lemon dressing.
If you fancy pushing the boat out a little – and why not? Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where it’s almost encouraged to show off and splash out – you could go for the classic rack of lamb (just £2.50 extra), which arrives with roasted heritage carrots, asparagus, colcannon mash, smoked bacon and lamb sauce.
Or the 8 oz rib-eye steak is just £3.50 more, and comes with grilled heirloom tomato, roasted mushroom and perfectly seasoned skin-on fries.
Desserts are all vegan or vegetarian-friendly, ranging from chocolate brownie plus cold custard cream, candy floss and dried raspberries; Manchester tart (with a wonderful-sounding roast strawberry ice cream); a vegan banana cake with coconut and toffee sauce; or simply the reliable option of sorbets and ice creams.
Is your mouth watering yet? Of course it is.
The good news is you don’t have to wait until Valentine’s Day itself to try this wide-ranging menu – it’s running all the way through to Sunday the 16th, meaning if you’re struggling to choose what dishes to try, you can enjoy a Peaky Blinders meal twice, or even thrice.
So, if you and your sweetheart have a penchant for Thomas Shelby or Grace Burgess from the hit BBC series, why not dress up like them, flapper or dapper-style, and head to the city’s most vibrant venue for a truly memorable meal?
Of course, dressing up isn’t compulsory, but it might be just the ticket to get your other half’s heart racing and their blood pumping. We’ll leave the decision on whether to affect a Brummie accent up to you.
The Flappers & Dappers set menu runs until Sunday 16th February at Peaky Blinders, Peter Street.
