New super premium gin launches in first of its kind City of Manchester Distillery

The first bottles of the latest gin to be distilled in Manchester have landed. Three Rivers is a super premium dry gin created at the first dedicated gin distillery in Manchester city centre – a railway arch in the Green Quarter.

Every bottle of Three Rivers is hand made in small batches using a 450 litre, custom built, Arnold Holstein copper pot still.

When master distiller Dave Rigby was on his travels researching the product, he visited craft distilleries in the mid-west of America where he identified a trend for distillers to use botanicals sourced locally. This gives gin its local character.

This made him think hard about Manchester and its history. What ingredients could he add, apart from coal? He thought about the location they had chosen for the distillery in the shadow of Angel Meadows and what workers have eaten during the Industrial Revolution – porridge and gruel made from oats. Full of oil and sweetness, oil would help contribute to the rounded-smooth mouthfeel and the sweetness would sit beautifully with the other botanicals in the mid-pallette, finely balanced by a spicy finish from black pepper.

What you end up with is a super premium and beautifully balanced gin which doesn’t require handfuls of fruit, bitters or other accompaniments to unlock the flavours of the gin.

Every drop of Manchester Three Rivers Gin is hand crafted on site at its Green Quarter distillery. From August 18, you can take a tour of the premises and get a deeper understanding of the history of gin and the process by which it is made. You will also get the chance to see Angel, the beautiful custom built 450l copper pot Arnold Holstein still up close and make your very own bottle of gin on the mini copper alembic stills to take home with you.

You’ll also have the opportunity to try classic gin cocktails from the prohibition era and modern creations from some of the world’s leading mixologists.

If you can’t wait till then, the first bottles are now on sale at Hanging Ditch, Victoria Street. They are hosting a Meet the Master Distiller event on Saturday 30th July from 3pm when Dave will be giving away free tasting samples, as well as answering questions about Three Rivers Gin and its story. This is a great opportunity to be one of the first to buy a bottle.

The Gin Experience Tours will take place from Thursday 18 August 2016 to Sunday 27th November 2016 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 1pm. Tickets are £95pp.
