Some of Europe’s top esports athletes descended on Salford’s MediaCity this past weekend as EA Sports brought its prestigious eChampions League tournament to the North West for two action-packed rounds.

Running from the 16th to the 18th of May, the sixth season of the eChampions League, the esports counterpart to UEFA’s Champions League, featured 36 elite FC25 players representing major European football clubs.

Each had earned their place by dominating their national esports leagues, setting the stage for a fierce league phase in which all competitors played six matches.

The top 24 progressed to a knockout round, and after a weekend of razor-sharp gameplay, eight finalists emerged.

Those eight will now head to Munich for the tournament’s grand final at the end of May, just days before the UEFA Champions League final takes place in the same city.

“This event is a real statement about where esports is headed,” said Martin Chown, Managing Director at MediaCity.

“We’ve built an environment here that supports everything from grassroots gaming to global tournaments, and we’re proud to see world-class players and organisations choose MediaCity as their stage.”

With MediaCity also home to cutting-edge gaming education at the University of Salford and innovation hubs like HOST, the area is fast becoming a northern powerhouse for competitive gaming and digital media.
