Manchester Pride Parade in pictures as the city celebrates in glorious sunshine

Thousands of people lined the streets of Manchester in glorious sunshine to cheer on and celebrate this year’s Manchester Pride Parade.

The 2019 parade is being hailed the biggest event yet – with over 200 floats and thousands of people taking part to show their pride for the city’s LGBT+ culture and community.

And with blue skies all day on Saturday and soaring temperatures in Manchester it could well go down as the hottest Pride Parade to date too.

This year the parade’s theme was Deep Space Pride: A Future World of Equality with Manchester Pride hoping to reflect the future of LGBT+ equality.

A host of Manchester businesses, the emergency services, charity groups and organisations donned an array of fabulous outfits and decorated floats to embrace that deep space theme.

It meant everything from a full-on Star Wars float complete with Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to a spaceship-inspired Coronation Street float.

The parade also marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, an event which kick-started the modern LGBT+ pride movement and the force for organising pride marches on a much bigger scale.

The parade started just after midday on Deansgate, snaking through the city centre on past the Gay Village before finishing up at Fairfield Street by 3pm.

Colourful floats included an entry from the stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race – which has its first UK series airing for the first time in the UK in October.

The show’s contestants, including Manchester’s Divina De Campo, were in suitably glamorous form as they made their first public outing together at the Pride Parade.

The city centre’s streets were awash with rainbows – as thousands of people, young and old, showed their support and pride in the LGBT+ community by displaying the rainbow flag.

The Pride festival continues across the bank holiday weekend – with the first ever Manchester Pride Live opening up at Mayfield Depot on Saturday with performances from Years and Years and Emeli Sande.

On Sunday all eyes will once again be back at Mayfield when Ariana Grande makes her eagerly anticipated return to Manchester to headline Pride Live.
