Former MasterChef winner Simon Wood opened his flagship First Street restaurant in 2017, and it has gone on to receive local and national acclaim with two AA rosettes for culinary excellence and favourable reviews in national newspapers including The Guardian and The Telegraph, were the described Simon’s tutti-frutti dessert as “pure swooning delirium. Magnificent.” The restaurant is also recommended in the 2020 edition of the Michelin Guide - Great Britain & Ireland.
Tasting menus are available in five, seven and 10 courses, with regular, vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan selections available, plus regular and premium wine flights available to add on. The focus is on unintimidating high end dining, with a relaxed friendly feel. It’s a restaurant which continues to go from strength to strength, growing in creativity and confidence each visit.
Meat dishes might include mutton tartare with lamb powder, aged balsamic and goats cheese tartare sauce, osso bucco with veal tenderloin, oregano and tomato vine oil, or ham | and duck egg with truffle chips and lardo, with fish options including satay red prawn with wild rice, Sriracha and gooseberry, or Cornish crab crumpet with avocado and elderflower emulsion.
Vegan dishes show serious invention, with options such as basil sorbet with acidulated baby tomato, black olive and tomato consommé, or artichoke with purple potato, truffle and lacto blueberry. To ensure a fluid journey for guests, menu selection and dietary information at point of booking is mandatory, while the regular and premium wine flights can be added on the day.
The wine list includes plenty by the glass as well as bottle, with something for every price point including some high-end treats, while spirits include several local tipples such as Didsbury Gin, Manchester Gin, Three Rivers and Salford’s Fenney Street gin. The beer list features local brewers Shindigger and Seven Bro7hers, and a range of signature cocktails has a rock’n’roll feel.
