Romani Language Workshop

Come and learn more about the fascinating history of the Romani language, and practice some dialects for yourself!

This workshop is free, open to all and is hosted by Juice Vamosi, a Roma language expert and translator. Please reserve your place.

Juice Vamosi grew up in a Roma community in Southern Hungary and currently lives in Oldham, Manchester. Since translating Romani to English from the age of ten, he went on to master most of the Romani dialects spoken all over the world - a unique skill. He has been a personal adviser to key figures in the World Bank and European Commission, for the Ministry of Equal Opportunities in Hungary and for many Roma organisations, TV channels, high schools and universities, alongside interpreting for governmental organisations and nonprofits. Juice is also the founder of Kaskosan, a charitable company whose mission is 'to build the capabilities and life chances of Roma communities and to achieve their well-being in the UK'.

In this workshop he will tell some of the histories of the Romani language, its similarities to Hindi and other Indo-Aryan languages, how it evolved in different ways as people moved to or through different countries and some of the 'loan words' picked up or given. Following this, there will be a chance to ask questions, and to practise some words in various dialects.
