Menswear brand Lanigan & Hulme is one of Manchester’s great success stories.

After years working for companies as varied as Hackett, Crombie and Arlo & Jacob, in 2017 Phil Lanigan and Neil Hulme opened their store in the freshly-revamped Royal Exchange Arcade, selling a carefully-curated range of high-quality men’s clothing.

Five years on, they have a successful clothing brand, a fiercely loyal customer base and acclaim from the most powerful names in the fashion industry.

It’s not hard to see why. Manchester has always led the way in the style stakes – just look at Liam Gallagher, George Best and the whole Madchester era

Every self-respecting man about town knows that details matter, and this is where Lanigan & Hulme stand out from the crowd.

The Made In Manchester range is a perfect example. The t-shirts, polos and hoodies from the range are made by English Fine Cottons, a revamped Manchester cotton mill that dates back to the time when the city was widely known as ‘cottonopolis’.

This mill produces all the cotton used for the Made In Manchester range, including the shorts and chinos which are designed and made with a local tailor.

As well as giving a nod to the city’s history as the centre of the world’s cotton industry, this is a welcome step away from the throwaway world of ‘fast fashion’.

These Made In Manchester items are designed to be wardrobe staples for years, made from the very best quality materials so the end result looks and feels stunning.

You’ll also find unique items, never to be repeated, but be quick, as these one-off pieces sell out quickly.

But that’s only one part of the story. Lanigan & Hulme’s Royal Exchange store is a true destination venue, where the expert team can find you the perfect piece of clothing that’s guaranteed to fit like a dream.

It harks back to the golden era of men’s fashion where customer service is everything.

At Lanigan & Hulme, shopping for a new outfit becomes a truly personalised experience, far removed from a high street grab and dash.

This explains why the shop’s customers return again and again, with word-of-mouth attracting new visitors all the time.

In fact, due to demand from envious wives and girlfriends, you’ll even find a couple of items of female clothing under the Made In Manchester brand.

Naturally, there are plans to branch out across the North West, with preparations in place to gradually open new stores across the region.

It’s no surprise that since the end of lockdown measures, Lanigan & Hulme has been selling more and more of these own-label items.

Those tough couple of years meant people could reassess what really matters, ultimately shifting towards supporting local businesses while thinking about future generations and the benefits of choosing quality over quantity.

The vision of this inspirational boutique store hasn’t gone unnoticed. Only recently, fashion bible Drapers devoted an extensive profile to Lanigan & Hulme, demonstrating its role at the forefront of modern men’s fashion.

Tired of the ill-fitting identikit clothes found at faceless chain stores?

It’s time to prioritise what matters: high-quality, ethically-sourced and environmentally-friendly clothing for the proud Mancunian, created by a true Manchester institution.
