2016 was the twentieth anniversary of the IRA bomb and Sir Richard Leese’s election as leader of Manchester city council. It was the year 200,000 people turned out for the Olympic and Paralympic heroes parade, and the year Manchester was named the number one most liveable city in the UK, the most competitive location for business in Europe, and one of the most LGBT-friendly places in the world to visit. And record demand for hotel beds proved Manchester’s growth as a tourism destination. Just another year in the life of Manchester.
Here are our most read stories of the year, proving Manchester is a city which continues to excite and surprise.
