Manchester is a city that loves its green spaces. From the thriving tree-tops of Castlefield Viaduct to the well-trodden paths of Heaton Park and Platt Fields, there’s a deep-rooted pride in the places that bring nature to the heart of the city. Right in the middle of it all, Hulme Community Garden Centre (HCGC) has quietly become one of Manchester’s most treasured green sanctuaries – and this July 5th, it’s turning 25.
Running from 11 am to 7 pm, this free, family-friendly event promises a fun day of music, crafts, food, and connection – all set in one of Manchester’s most treasured hidden gems.
Hulme Community Garden Centre turns 25

Expect a buzz of activity across the site: live music from local legends, nature-based fun for the kids, delicious bites and a well-stocked bar, plus DJs from TRW, Luna Lazer and Dub Smugglers keeping the good vibes flowing all day long.
There’ll be nature crafts, planting sessions, a raffle bursting with prizes, and stalls showcasing everything from handmade garden goods to green living inspiration. Workshops and tours will offer guests the chance to reflect on HCGC’s extraordinary 25-year journey – and to look ahead at what’s still to come.
And there’s a lot to celebrate.
Manchester’s two-acre urban paradise

From its beginnings on a reclaimed bit of Hulme scrubland, HCGC has blossomed into a thriving two-acre urban paradise – part community hub, part education space, part garden centre, and always 100% heart. It’s a place where plants, people and ideas have taken root, and where a community has grown stronger with every passing year.
Project Manager Gianetta Grainger said, “Reaching 25 years is a huge milestone for us. “Hulme Community Garden Centre has always been more than just a green space – it’s a place where people grow as much as the plants!
“We’re a garden centre with a difference that makes a real difference to people’s lives. This anniversary is about celebrating everything we’ve achieved together as a community.”
Founded in 2000, Hulme Community Garden Centre is a not-for-profit, community-led project rooted in organic, sustainable principles. It welcomes over 10,000 visitors each year, offering everything from peat-free plants and eco-gardening products to inclusive education sessions, volunteering opportunities, and family events
Its lush site features a strawbale classroom, wildlife pond, polytunnel, community gardens, and the Garden Café – serving up coffee, cakes and good vibes all week long.
“An amazing spirit of togetherness”
That spirit of togetherness has powered countless achievements over the years – from the much-loved Green Island Festival, to the centre’s wide-reaching education programmes and daily volunteer sessions that bring people of all ages and backgrounds together through the power of nature.
The anniversary also marks the unveiling of HCGC’s newest addition, a beautiful new woodwork workshop space, made possible through support from The National Lottery’s Awards for All, Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund, The Skelton Charity, the Neighbourhood Investment Fund, and others. The workshop will give even more people the chance to learn hands-on skills, build projects for the community, and get involved in shaping the site’s future.
“The recent developments, supported by the Greater Manchester Environment Fund and Green Spaces, have helped us make major improvements to the site,” says Gianetta.
“With the backing of so many individuals, groups and local businesses, we’ve created spaces that will serve the community for years to come – especially in challenging times where many garden centres are struggling. Thanks to the dedication of our team and our amazing volunteers, HCGC continues to thrive.”
Whether you’re a long-time supporter or simply curious to discover this award-winning garden haven for the first time, everyone is welcome to join the celebration on Saturday.
In Gianetta’s words: “This is a party for everyone who has ever planted a seed, picked up a spade, or shared a cup of tea here. It’s about connection, celebration and gratitude – and we can’t wait to welcome you.”
HCGC is open 7 days a week – come for the plants, stay for the peace.
