The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with the podcast Pan Pal Susto, presents the talk “Pan Pal Susto: The Podcast That Transformed Health Stories in Spanish’ by science communicator Maricarmen Climent.

In this TED-style talk, filled with emotions and humour, the speaker shares the myths and absurd comments she has encountered while living with type 1 diabetes, and how these experiences inspired the creation of Pan Pal Susto. It aim is to transform the way we tell health stories.

Pan Pal Susto is a narrative podcast that explores health stories beyond the physical body. Each episode features the testimony of someone living with a physical or mental condition, connecting health with its social, cultural, and human context, focusing on Hispanic perspectives.

Maricarmen Climent is a specialist in health risk communication and a science journalist. For the past six years, she has been dedicated to improving the understanding of health and environmental risks, including four years at the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at the University of Cambridge. With a decade of experience in science journalism on radio and television, she founded the Pan Pal Susto podcast and was the recipient of Mexico’s 2023 National Journalism Award in the Scientific and Cultural category.
