My Heart is in the East

22 June 2023 @ 19:00 - 21:30

From £11

The Manchester premiere of a new play by Jessica Litwak about the vital importance of language and imagination to both who we are and how together we might be.

“My Heart is in the East” project centres around a play that spans two millennia and four locations: Basra, Beirut, New York and ancient Cordoba, with two actors, each playing two roles.

The play looks at the meeting points between East and West, Arab and Jew, man and woman, history and present day. It seeks to explore a shared identity around what binds us rather than divides us – both 1000 years ago and today.

Taʿāyish, is the Arabic word for coexistence. The notion of coexistence (in Spanish convivencia) has its origin in al-Andalus (Andalusia) where Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together…

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The play will be followed by a live poetry slam with audience members and a discussion on interfaith.
  • The event is suitable for people aged 15+. Please note that the performance contains political themes and strong language.
