Overview

Christopher Isherwood’s iconic novel A Single Man is brought to life in a powerful new contemporary ballet from award-winning director and choreographer Jonathan Watkins.

This bold reimagining tells the story of George, a gay, middle-aged professor struggling with the sudden loss of his long-term partner, Jim. As he moves through his day, George searches for meaning and connection – torn between sorrow and the urge to live again. A chance encounter could reignite his sense of hope and joy.

Featuring brand new songs performed live by celebrated singer-songwriter John Grant, with music by Jasmin Kent Rodgman and Manchester Collective, this emotional production combines ballet and contemporary dance with powerful live performance.

Former Royal Ballet Principal Ed Watson takes on the role of George’s outward self, while John Grant gives voice to his inner world. On Saturday 5 July, the role will be performed by Jonathan Goddard.

The creative team includes Oscar-winning costume designer Holly Waddington (Poor Things), set designer Chiara Stephenson (known for work with SZA, Lorde and Björk), costume designer Eleanor Bull and lighting by Simisola Majekodunmi.

Based on Isherwood’s influential 1964 novel – also adapted into an Oscar-nominated film – A Single Man is a poignant meditation on grief, sexuality and what it means to be human.
