This Deansgate hotspot will spruce up your January drinking with retro candy style drinks

Was your office Christmas party a slightly inebriated minefield of awkward social situations and utterly failed professionalism, leading to somewhat sloppy make-out sessions, cringeworthy karaoke and, a very awkward morning after the night before?

Was your New Year’s Eve disappointing? You think you’re going to be ringing in the New Year in a style that would make Jay Gatsby jealous but instead end up sobbing over your tenth pina colada, wondering why nobody wants to kiss you when the clock hits midnight.

Well, we have good news.

The awkward office party and the overpriced NYE party may have come and gone, but there’s still plenty of reasons to find a new watering hole this month.

The Living Room have just revamped their cocktail menu and, with retro candy floss cocktails and polaroid Pornstars, you’d be mad not to check them out.

Forget all about your questionable festive decisions and head on down. It’s one of Manchester’s first and finest cocktail bars and has been making waves on the drinks scene since 1999.

The bar itself is slick and large and the tables are lit by candlelight. The Pinterest-esque decor is plush and easy on the eye and the seats. Everything is perfectly laid out and, with its cosy corners and inviting atmosphere, the place gets a big thumbs up from us.

If you’re sick of the same old drinks in the same old dives, maybe it’s time to try something different? Like vodka based retro candy style cocktails at The Living Room.

If you’re feeling a tad adventurous, order yourself a Cranberry Candy – a mixture of Absolut Vanilla Vodka, grenadine syrup, lemon juice and cranberry juice, served with candy floss – where you’ll watch candy floss sizzle into a vodka base as you sip the night away.

The Waterloo – Tanqueray Gin, Chambord, lemon juice, sugar syrup, egg white and cranberry juice. Gin is IN, and if you like your cocktails more citrus than sweet, let the Waterloo win you over

Watermelon & Lychee Sling – Tanqueray Gin, Kwai Feh Lychee, Midori, sugar syrup, lime juice, apple juice and watermelon wedges. A refreshing taste of the summer, with fresh watermelon paired with lychee and melon liqueur.

Something for the hidden cowboy inside the boys is the Rum Old Fashioned – a mixture of Kraken Rum, sugar syrup, orange bitters, orange zest – for those who like their cocktails dark and stormy. Kraken Rum has smooth vanilla, coffee and caramel notes, spiced with a touch of Gunpowder.

One of our favourite drinks is the Polaroid Martini. The big one. This tempting and tantilising delight is a hearty mixture of mango vodka, white peach puree, vanilla sugar syrup, pineapple juice and fresh lemon. It comes garnished with a polaroid of you and your party so try and look relatively presentable where you can.

You’ll be chuffed to know that from 5pm on Sundays and on Fridays and Saturdays until 5pm, there’s a stellar happy hour running where you can get all cocktails for £5.95.

If you want to try something a little different in the new year, there’s also a killer cocktail masterclass which starts at just £25. The sky’s the limit on what flavours or flavour combinations can be achieved and the dim lighting, plush drinks list and oh-so-swanky bartenders all add to the air of creativity.

Although The Living Room might feel like a membership joint, don’t worry. There are no joining requirements other than a love of plush decor and and extra special drinks.

If you really want to push the boat out, head down to try the cocktail tree alone. Forget baubles. It’s brought to the table dripping in Pornstar Martinis.

Just what the doctor ordered.
