Vegetarian restaurant in Manchester

Vegetarian food has become more and more popular recently, and with a range of amazing restaurants to try in Manchester, it’s no surprise.

Making more meat-free choices continues to be a big positive trend in Manchester.

The Vegetarian Movement

Manchester area is actually home to the modern vegetarian movement as we know it today.

In 1808, the rather ironically named Reverend Cowherd formed The Bible Christian Church in Salford, one of whose practices was following a meat-free diet.

They met in the – also ironically named – Beefsteak Chapel and became one of the founding groups involved in the formation of The Vegetarian Society in 1847.

Although the Vegetarian Society was actually formed near Richmond in Surrey, Manchester seemed to be the place to be. It had its first annual meeting in Manchester in 1848 and from 1849 onwards, it continued to be prominent here.

They’ve recently just moved back to the city.

Manchester has recently earned its stripes as one of the best places in the UK for vegan and vegetarian food. The surge in demand for vegan eateries has been remarkable, with an 84% increase in searches between 2021 and 2023.

Currently holding its spot as one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the UK, according to research conducted by LNER, Manchester boasts an impressive score of 64.9 out of 100.

This recognition is based on comprehensive analysis, taking into account Google search data, the number of vegan restaurants listed on HappyCow, and the availability of vegan takeaway options on Deliveroo in the 20 largest cities in the UK.

With 5.6 vegan restaurants and 5.6 vegan takeaways per 100,000 residents, the city is proving to be a haven for those seeking plant-based delights.

Whether it’s a lifestyle choice, a Vegetarian Week or a Vegetarian Day, people all over the country make a conscious attempt to cut down on their meat consumption.

King Charles is actively seeking a chef to prepare his vegetarian dishes, while scientific studies suggest that plant-based protein can aid in building muscle.
