The BHF funds life saving research into heart and circulatory diseases like heart disease, stroke and vascular dementia, along with their risk factors like diabetes and high blood pressure. We aim to find cures and treatments, so we can give people more time with the ones they love.
Since launching in 1961, our work has helped to cut UK deaths from heart and circulatory diseases by more than half. Our ground-breaking science contributed to the first UK heart transplant, and we have also helped fund breakthroughs like pacemakers, portable defibrillators, and heart valve replacements.
Today, we continue funding research to save and improve lives – and in Manchester alone, the BHF currently funds over £16.4 million of research at local universities.
However, despite decades of progress, we still have so much more to do.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) are proud to be part of the I Love Manchester Charity Challenge 2022. Sadly, every 80 minutes someone in the Greater Manchester area loses their life to heart and circulatory disease. To recognise this we have come up with the 80 challenge to raise funds and awareness of our vital work.
The chosen challenger will pledge to run or walk 80km over a two-week period. In addition, they will agree to complete a daily circuit of 80 burpees, 80-star jumps and 80 sit-ups.
*The challenger is encouraged to spread the word about the challenge to their networks, fundraise and encourage people to donate, however, I Love MCR will be promoting the initiative and helping to gather donations.
