Mathew Horne, known for playing ‘Gav’ in Gavin and Stacey, will star in The Battle, a new comedy set during the 90s Britpop era. The play dives into the legendary chart rivalry between Blur and Oasis, as the music industry becomes a battleground of fame, egos, and unforgettable clashes.
Horne plays Andy Ross, the music exec caught between the two bands as they fight for No. 1. The Battle is based on real events and promises a darkly funny, razor-sharp look at this iconic moment in British music history. It will be at the Manchester Opera House from 17–21 March 2026, as part of a major UK tour and a West End run.
Horne says, “This play hits right in the middle of my teenage years, and I’m excited to bring this iconic time in music to life with such a talented team.”
Directed by Matthew Dunster, The Battle is John Niven’s first stage play, bringing his sharp writing from novels like Kill Your Friends to the stage. Expect foul language, quick wit, and a dive into the chaotic world of Britpop, where it was never just about the music, but about power, pride, and rivalry.
The show will also tour across the UK, with stops in Birmingham, Leicester, Cardiff, Glasgow, and more. Don’t miss the chance to relive one of the greatest rivalries in rock history.
