Two national publications name Stockport in top 12 places to live in the U.K

In a recent wave of accolades, Stockport has emerged as a standout destination for both first-time buyers and retirees, garnering recognition from prominent sources including consumer group Which? and The Times newspaper.

Consumer group Which? highlighted Stockport as one of the top 12 best places to retire in the UK.

This recognition was based on a comprehensive survey of 1,000 members, who emphasized the importance of factors such as healthcare access (88%), green spaces (75%), proximity to leisure activities (31%), and low crime levels.

Stockport scored impressively, receiving ratings of 7.8 out of 10 for healthcare, 7.6 out of 10 for residents’ happiness, and a stellar 9.2 out of 10 for its abundance of parks and playing fields.

With an average house price of £285,000, Stockport also stood out as an affordable option for those looking to purchase a retirement property.

Commenting on Stockport’s appeal, a spokesperson for Which? lauded areas like Marple, noting, “There are various smaller towns and villages beyond the main industrial centre of Stockport that have helped this area score highly in our analysis.”

Marple, with its 16 canal locks, Roman Lakes leisure complex, proximity to the Peak District National Park, and golf courses, received special mention for its allure.

Meanwhile, The Times celebrated Stockport’s remarkable transformation, describing it as a “funky alternative” to Manchester’s trendiest neighbourhoods.

The arrival of independent shops, bars, and restaurants, particularly in the Underbanks area, has contributed to Stockport’s newfound vibrancy.

Direct train services to Manchester Piccadilly (just eight minutes away) and London Euston (about two hours) make Stockport exceptionally well-connected.

Its diverse offerings, including a bustling indoor market, four cinemas, parks, and easy access to the Peak District, add to its charm.

Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, expressed his pride in Stockport’s recognition, saying, “To be recognised as one of the best places for people both to get on the property ladder or to see out their retirement is high praise and reinforces the borough’s deserved reputation as a great place not just to work but also to live for one’s entire life, especially as we celebrate being this year’s Greater Manchester Town of Culture.”

The accolades come at a time when Stockport is undergoing a significant transformation, with a £1 billion investment program breathing new life into the area.

Desirable property options for first-time buyers, including red-brick terraces and converted mill flats, are contributing to the borough’s appeal as a place to call home.
