A new era of fitness, wellbeing and community is coming to Altrincham, as the town’s £20m state-of-the-art leisure centre gets ready to open its doors.

From Tuesday 26 August, move Altrincham on Oakfield Road will begin a phased reopening. Backed by Trafford Council and Sport England, the new centre is designed to help people of all ages live more active, healthy and independent lives.

Jo Cherrett, CEO of Trafford Leisure, says the centre will be a safe, welcoming space for everyone – from babies to older adults – with something for every ability and interest. She also highlighted the new Cove Spa as a real treat that adds to the experience.

“The benefits of being active are huge,” she said. “A healthy lifestyle is the foundation for a happy life, and this centre – along with the expert support of our staff – will inspire and support our community to move more every day.”

The brand-new centre includes a 25-metre main pool, learner pool, accessible changing facilities and a Changing Places toilet – a first for the town. There’s also a large fitness suite, wellness assessment room, two flexible studios, immersive cycle studio, four-court sports hall, and a dedicated gymnastics hub.

Looking to unwind? The Cove Spa offers a vitality pool, sensory showers, saunas, steam rooms, and even an ice fountain. For those after a healthy bite, MOST Bakery will serve fresh, nutritious meals and drinks seven days a week.

Cllr Eve Parker, Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said the centre is a big step forward for the borough.

“We’re so proud to present this fantastic facility to the Altrincham community,” she said. “It supports our goals around climate action and making sport and fitness accessible to all. We want people of all ages and abilities to be as fit and active as they can be – and move Altrincham will help make that happen.”

The revamped building replaces the old leisure centre and brings it into the future with air source heat pumps, solar panels and no gas use – thanks to over £2m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund via the GMCA.

It’s a bold new chapter for Altrincham – and it’s just getting started.

Move Altrincham opens from 26 August 2025.
