Fifteen independent retailers on the 3rd floor of Afflecks are teaming up to throw a free summer party this weekend with live music, DJs, giveaways, discounts and, best of all, free cake.

And everyone is invited.

“Rather then people heading to well known high street shops or shopping online, we’d love them to come and explore what we have to offer – and have fun doing so,” says Stag and Raven owner Hannah Cox.

“Running a small independent creative business is a labour of love and we rely on the support of customers old and new to help us continue.”

The Northern Quarter building has long had a fashionable history. It was once home to Affleck & Brown, a drapery business started in the 1860s which went on to become a department store.

It became Afflecks Palace in 1981, offering an environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts. In the 1990s, it was to the go-to spot for Madchester gear.

Today it’s just Afflecks, but it’s still packed with quirky independent traders, offering everything from collectible action figures, fancy dress and crystals to gothic accessories, guitars and vinyl records.

The team of retailers on the 3rd floor have decided to focus on creating an event to encourage people to come and explore what they have to offer. There’s no pressure to buy, just an opportunity to discover what an interesting and eclectic place Afflecks is.

But with offers on the day such as free prints, 2 for 1 milkshakes and half-price Lego, you may well be tempted.

And as with all good parties, there will be live music, balloons, face painting – and cake.

“Our free summer party is an opportunity for us to come together as independent retailers and give our customers a great big thank you for supporting small businesses ” says Hannah.

“It’s a chance for us to show that we believe in community over competition and give people a reason to come and explore what we have to offer”.

Join the party on the 3rd floor on Saturday 21st July from 10am – 6pm.
