Selecting Manchester’s best bars and pubs isn’t an easy task with the city home to everything from quirky cocktail bars to modern craft beer-focused boozers providing something for everyone. Global review site TripAdvisor is a go-to resource for many travellers and although some love it and some loathe it, there’s no denying its popularity –  so here’s the top five bars and pubs in Manchester as chosen by the site’s users.

1. The Liquor Store

Theliquorstore Front

Tucked away just off Deansgate, The Liquor Store is one of Manchester’s favourite cocktail bars – and its well-deserved popularity is backed up by TripAdvisor reviewers. Many of the cocktails on the menu have nods towards its Mancunian heritage, and a playlist of indie and rock tunes provide the soundtrack to the venue’s atmosphere. There’s also a small but perfectly formed food menu including deli platters, nachos and bar snacks if you want something to nibble with your cocktail.

What do the reviewers say?

Katie M: ‘This is such a great little bar!! We always have drinks here when we go into Manchester; the cocktails are amazing! And if there isn’t a cocktail you like, they’ll make one up for you!! Nachos are BEAUTIFUL. You definitely need someone to share them with as they are HUGE, worth every penny!!’

leorobinson1990: ‘The liquor store in Manchester is one of the best cocktail bars around! It has such a relaxed atmosphere and always plays good music and is kept clean. The cocktails are to die for and the staff are so polite and friendly but so chilled at the same time. The place has an elegant but different style. Love it :-)’

Simon G: ‘Agree with the fans, great place, great staff, amazing drinks!!! Ambiance is excellent. Good crowd no idiots. New place to go in Manchester. For a small bar with good tunes and people there’s no where else to go …..’

Ashleighux: ‘Stumbled upon this little hidden gem when walking past and I have to say it was a great find. The cocktails are amazing, from the presentation to the taste of them. The bar men even gave us a few tips on how to make them.’

2. Port Street Beer House

Port Street Beer House

Manchester’s craft beer mecca comes in at number two on the list. The NQ bar serves a wide range of cask and keg beer from the local area, the UK and beyond and its selection often includes rare beers not on offer at other venues.

What do the reviewers say?

John W: ‘For anyone who is into their beer, from well brewed local ales to exotic imports, Port Street has an amazing range to choose from.’

Alistair S: ‘A beautifully unfussy boozer that puts a good pint and a good chat in the middle of it.’

3. Cane and Grain

Caneandgrain 2

Describing themselves as ‘part skate bar, part speakeasy, part tiki heaven’, Cane and Grain serve cocktails and craft beer in the heart of the Northern Quarter along with a menu of beef and pork ribs and loaded fries. It’s also home to a ‘hidden’ upstairs bar.

What do the reviewers say?

AllieGR: ‘Went on a whim. Was fantastic. The food was 10/10 but what stood out was the service. Friendly and very professional. Excellent cocktails too. Would recommend, try the upstairs bar if you can find it!’

Alison12McF: ‘So pleased we found the Cane & Grain. The food was amazing, portions massive and service great. Lovely cocktails too!’

4. RedBank Co

Redbankco

The area now known as The Green Quarter has seen a rise in popularity in recent years – and RedBank Co is its hub. It’s open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings – and also serves up breakfast and brunch 10am-3pm on weekends. It’s known for its cocktail menu, weekly quiz and bargain priced pizzas.

What do the reviewers say?

RFS89: ‘The food is always fantastic and worth every penny – including the £1 freshly made pizzas on a Thursday before the weekly quiz. The bar has a wide selection of locally brewed and more well known beers/ales, as well as a massive selection of cocktails. If you’re stuck at what to order, Pete or any of the other staff are always willing to help out.’

krisharris: ‘These guys do it right. Amazing little place and the pub quiz is awesome. Anything goes here. Awesome project!’

5. Corbieres Bar

Corbieres Manchester 1

Underground bar Corbieres is definitely a Manchester institution – if you can find it! Located down an unassuming flight of stairs close to St Ann’s Square, inside you’ll find a cavernous subterranean venue with one of the city’s best juke boxes.

What do the reviewers say?

Danny A: ‘Excellent bar, loads of character, class juke box ;)’

Off their P: ‘I been going to Corbieres for over 30 years now and it never disappoints. A great range of drinks, good service and a tremendous juke box. The place drips with atmosphere and prices are always fair.’
