Home Sweet Home Great Northern has been open two weeks so it’s time to sample the most important meal of the day at our new home from home just off Deansgate…

We all know and love the American comfort food joint in Manchester’s Northern Quarter that serves breakfast, brunch and dinner seven days a week. Their infamous cake counter is filled daily with fresh cakes, treats and ‘dreamy’ flavour combinations.

We also all know how busy it can be. I mean, it’s rammed to the rafters in there every day. And have you ever tried to get in on a Sunday morning? It’s like trying to get into the Apple Store on the same day they release a new iPhone.

Which is the main reason they decided – after an arduous search for the right space – to take over the old spacious Lucha Libre unit at Great Northern that became available so suddenly in August.

Now then, the Great Northern site boasts a coffee shop come bar at the front, a lazy lounge area at the back and American-style booths (and toilets) upstairs. It’s all a bit more grown up and less stuffy. However, despite having high ceilings and lots more space, they’ve managed to retain the kitsch and cosy vibe that made the Northern Quarter venue so popular.

What does make the GN venue different is the option to book a table amongst their 150 covers and, if you’re cool enough, a private dining room that hosts an additional 20 covers. This somewhat secret room is still being polished off so I can’t tell you what awaits you in there but I’m sure it’ll be sweet, homely, with the right amount of naughty.

What’s more the construction team behind the group are planning a versatile all-weather/all-year-round outside area ready for next spring/summer.

Enough about the space, let’s get to the most important bit; breakfast.

The menu is massive. Breakfast includes sections such as Bennies – served on toasted muffins; House Hash A Go-Go – crispy breakfast style potatoes with melty cheese, onions, peppers, topped with eggs; Classics and Pancakes.

The stars of the show have to be Terry Benedict (£9) which is slow cooked beef short rib, chorizo, poached eggs hollandaise, bbq crema and picked chilli; Steak ’n’ Eggs (£10) which includes house hash, seared flattened rump steak served pink as standard and poached eggs.

Muscle Beach

For something more nutritious – perhaps for our local gym fiend friends – Muscle Beach (£10) which combines chilli rubbed steak, scrambled eggs, poached egg, avocado, spinach and taco sauce. No carbs.

But if you, like me, fancy something a little naughtier for breakfast (it is Friday) you should get stuck in to a big, thick and fluffy pancake – they’re all served with whipped cinnamon butter. I’d recommend Apple & Cinnamon (£9.50) for this nostalgic time of year. If you’re a bit odd with food, like Elvis was, you can ask for a side of bacon with your pancake (£2.50).

If you, like me, can’t start the day properly without 5 and a half coffees, grab a bottomless filter coffee (£2.20) which is as much coffee as you need when ordered with any breakfast before 12pm.

So, with more accessible room, super-fast WiFi and a menu as varied as the California Games, Home Sweet Home GN is a comfy place to work from the crack of dawn until the cows come home.

Alongside our twitter competition to WIN breakfast for two, they’re giving away FREE filter coffee with breakfast all weekend – THIS WEEKEND.

They’re open from 9am until 10pm Mon-Thu and 9am ‘till 11pm Fri-Sun.
