Jose: should he stay or should he go? 

Last season it was OK. Most United fans took a couple of negative performances parking the bus. We knew we didn’t have the squad and, to be honest, a bit of solidity after Moyes and van Gaal was welcomed.

It led to two trophies and a place in the Champions League.

Not so this season. Mourinho has spent big again – with the biggest outlay on a goalscorer. To leave £75million Romelu Lukaku so isolated against Liverpool was embarrassing.

Let’s be honest, Liverpool have been woeful at the back this season. They were there to be got at. And we gave them so much respect.

This isn’t acceptable. Not against them. United fans love nothing more than winning away at Anfield, but at the moment the manager isn’t giving us the opportunity to enjoy it.

And then he starts making overtures to PSG the following day and then refusing to commit his future to the club long term this week.

It’s rumoured PSG will make a move for him this summer. We know Mourinho is a master at manipulation. Of opposing managers, players and his own club. His stock is pretty high at United and he knows this. He’s the first manager since Fergie to give us a realistic chance of winning the league. He’s using it to his advantage.

But it begs the question. Do United fans want him to continue with his brand of ‘scared’ football against our fiercest rivals? If, for example, he played Herrera as a man-to-man marker on Eden Hazard again at home to Chelsea rather than getting at them, would we take it? I don’t think so.

The contrast between how United lined up at Liverpool and how City did at Chelsea is stark.

A fixed believer in his own team and philosophy, Guardiola stuck to his guns and won his way. City were sublime and played Chelsea off the park. United were scared and showed too much respect to an average Liverpool team without their best attacking player.

A lot has been made about Mourinho’s track record. He usually wins the league in his second season and then suffers a major fall out about a year or so later.

I can see this potentially happening at United.

If  – and it’s a huge if considering City’s current form – Mourinho wins the league this season, the fans will, of course, be happy. If he does it, he’ll do it in his own way. That means defensive against the big boys, more expansive against the dross.

There’s no doubt United fans would take that as the feeling of playing as champions is really beginning to fade and we’re starting to feel a little like Liverpool.

But if we did win the title, he wouldn’t change. He’d go to Anfield as champions and play the same way. Now that would be terrible. So, I put it to the rest of the Old Trafford faithful, would it be such a bad thing if he does go this summer?

If – and again this is a huge if – the club could line someone up to help us kick on and play the style of football we crave it wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Prising Pochettino from Spurs would definitely be a good start. But we know from recent experience, hiring managers is not one of the club’s current fortes, so it would never be guaranteed.

I was a big fan of Jose when he first came in. I loved him last season for bringing in some silverware, and I rate him to attract the best players in the world.

Bringing Pogba back was great, as was grabbing Lukaku from under the noses of Chelsea. But I’m getting tired of him already.

I wanted him in and argued against the naysayers who complained his brand of football was so anti-United it wouldn’t be the right fit. Those voices are becoming louder and I’m starting to listen.

Jose, if you do love Paris so much maybe head over there. We might just be OK without you.
