Street food is now an integral part of Manchester’s food and drink scene but street food traders are subject to the the whims of the elements. In Manchester that means a lot of hard working people often leaving with excess stock and light wallets.

Now The Kitchens has come to an end at Leftbank, you might be wondering what’s happening to the traders that didn’t grab the top spot.

Whilst the Bangers and Bacon/Well Hung guys are setting up BEASTro, the Hip Hop Chip Shop have been busy setting up a permanent residency at Kosmonaut in the Northern Quarter.

“Our next move was always to expand and find a bricks and mortar place we can call home,” says co-owner Ozzie. “It was so important to find the right venue with the right people and as soon as we met the owners and all the staff at Kosmonaut, it just felt right. They were proper passionate and full to the brim with ideas of what we could do together.”

The untraditional fish and chip slingers will be bringing their boom box to the Tariff Street bar previously known for its craft beer and roast dinners – and it’s a breath of fresh air. The NQ is teeming with burger joints and brunch spots but the Hip Hop Chippy’s mix of vegetarian and meat-based dishes should set them apart from a samey crowd.

Co-owner and head chef Luke Stocks has put together a menu that includes Lyte Bytes like the Fish Wrap, full of battered fish biters, tartare sauce and mixed leaves served in a tortilla wrap, and the Halloumi Wrap, as well as heartier dishes such as the Meat Junkie Meal – chilli battered sausage wrapped in bacon with chips served with curry sauce – all for just £7.

And with GRUB setting up on a weekly basis at Alphabet Brewery, things are going from strength to strength.

Being the Hip Hop Chip Shop, there’s going to be a party to celebrate their ‘residency till infinity’ which launches on 27 October, so keep your eyes on Kosmonaut’s Twitter page for a chance to win tickets to the launch do.
