The Castlefield Gallery, one of the north’s most active organisations in showcasing new and emerging artists, has won £150,000 of Arts Council funding.

Founded in 1984, the Castlefield Gallery presents new art by emerging and established artists at its city centre home and hosts regular talks and events. It is recognised for promoting artists at key stages in their career – including some who have gone on to win the Turner Prize.

It’s also a source of support for artists, running development programmes and initiatives such as New Art Spaces, which has been turning empty properties into temporary creative spaces since 2012.

The funding comes from Catalyst Evolve, a new initiative from Arts Council England which aims to support arts organisations which have demonstrated the potential to attract more private donations. Any money raised by the Gallery will be matched by the fund over a period of three years.

Director Kwong Lee said: “Castlefield Gallery’s vision is for the North to be a place where artists can develop work of international standing and this funding will enable the gallery to maximise our core work of artist development and providing greater opportunities for audiences to see exciting new contemporary art in Manchester.”

Currently on display is a debut solo exhibition by Yorkshire-based artist Amelia Crouch which explores language and words like you have perhaps never seen them before. This includes word games, anagrams, children’s songs and even scientific experiments – something which needs to be seen to be understood!

It’s the latest in the series of Launch Pad projects – short exhibitions which punctuate the gallery’s curated programme and give emerging artists the chance to use the space as a testing ground so the public gets to see works of art by individuals who may go on to become widely known.

The Castlefield gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday 1-6pm
