Talented youngsters from a North Manchester theatre school are set to take on the West End and Broadway with their very own blockbuster musical, Streetz.
The ambitious show – to be performed on 4 and 5 May at the Abraham Moss Theatre, Crumpsall – was written from scratch by the directors and young people of the North West Youth Theatre School.
Taking inspiration from the young people’s own ideas and experiences, it tells the story of the lives, loves and losses of families living on a North Manchester street – and features a host of memorable songs.
The quality and professionalism of the show have won praise from celebrities including television actor Gary Damer, a patron of the theatre school.
Gary, well-known for his role as Lenny Lemon in CBBC’s Hotel Trubble, said: “I was blown away the first time I saw Streetz. The production is so polished that it’s hard to believe you’re not watching a professional show.”
Tempany Windsor, 14, of Whitemoss Road, Blackley, plays Lucy – one of the leading roles. She said: “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in writing our own musical. Streetz isn’t like your typical cheesy American musicals – it’s based on real life in Manchester, people will be able to relate to it.”
Two of the youngest cast members are 11-year-olds Carmen Douglas and Jamie Coyne, who are in the same class at St Anne’s RC Primary School, Crumpsall. The pair play brother and sister Kara and Theo Nevis, who are foster children.
Prab Singh, Director of the North West Youth Theatre School, said: “We thought the best way for young people to appreciate brilliant musical theatre was to write their own show – and the results have exceeded all our expectations.
“We piloted Streetz last year and audiences absolutely loved it – there’s a real buzz about the fact that we’ve brought it back for a second run. I would urge people not to miss it – it really is a fantastic show.”
Streetz will be performed on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 May ay 7.30pm at the Abraham Moss Theatre, Crescent Road, Manchester M8 5UF. Tickets cost £10 for adults, £8 concessions, £32 family of four. Booking line: 07866 378569/0161 908 2466
